What is HazCom?
HazCom — Hazard Communication — is the U.S. standard for informing workers about the hazardous chemicals they work with. It’s administered by OSHA under the Hazard Communication Standard (often called HCS or the “right-to-know” standard) and is built around labels, safety data sheets (SDSs), and worker training.
Who needs HazCom training?
Any worker who is or may be exposed to hazardous chemicals in the course of their work, plus the supervisors responsible for them. If hazardous chemicals are used, handled, or stored in your workplace, the workers around them need HazCom training.
Is HazCom training legally required?
Yes. Under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard, employers are required to provide information and training to workers on the hazardous chemicals in their work area. It’s one of OSHA’s most frequently cited standards, so getting it right matters.
Does HazCom follow GHS?
Yes. HazCom is aligned with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), which standardized hazard classification, pictograms, signal words, and the 16-section safety data sheet format. Our training reflects the current GHS-aligned requirements.
When does HazCom training need to happen?
Workers must be trained at the time of their initial assignment to a work area with hazardous chemicals, and again whenever a new chemical hazard is introduced into their area. Refresher training is good practice, and retraining is expected when processes, products, or hazard information change.
What does the training cover?
Core areas include how the HazCom program works, reading and understanding labels and pictograms, using safety data sheets, the physical and health hazards of the chemicals in the workplace, protective measures and safe handling, and the details of the employer’s written hazard communication program.
